CSA Week 2

CSA

Greetings!

Big thanks to this whole farmily who came together with excitement, patience and kindness as we launched last week. Running and organizing a CSA is a lot of work especially as we test drive things in these early weeks. Whether it was emails getting sent to spam, realizing you actually want a smaller or larger share, or shortages on the selection table at pick-up…the first week was so crucial to us building a better week ahead and we are so committed to making that count. That said, the trip-ups were greatly outnumbered by triumphs. The community developing here is full of understanding, supportive members ready to make us feel appreciated even as we gain our footing. This is a team effort and ours is pretty sweet, thanks for being part of it. Here’s what’s ahead for week 2.

As a reminder our missed pick-up policy: If you’ll miss a week, you are absolutely welcome to send a friend or family member to pick up your share. If you don’t have someone who can pick up your share, email csa@titusville.farm. Shares from missed weeks will be donated to one of our local food donation partners/sites. Please email us by Tuesday morning if possible!

IMPORTANT NOTE: if you miss your off-site pick up you cannot pick up your share on-farm on a different day. Shares are harvested and packed to order. Getting a make-up share would be like receiving two shares that week and we just  do not have the capacity to support that with our crops or our labor… fingers crossed, some day out cloning machine might make that possible!

Harvest Highlight: Kohlrabi

So last week we used this space to get you on board with kale - a crop you’ll see all season long. This week we are welcoming kale’s oddball cousin to the party: Kohlrabi… or more formally known as Kohlrobert (hehe). Named from the German interpretation of “cabbage turnip” it brings the crunch of a turnip and the sweet mild flavor of cabbage or broccoli stems to the plate. I prefer mine peeled and sliced matchstick style for slaws: a favorite of mine pairs it with apples and shredded brussel sprouts topped in a lemony vinaigrette and walnuts, but sliced rounds for snacking and dipping are a sure win as well. You might also like to take it cubed, honeyed and seasoned to the roasting pan before the summer fully turns on and our ovens turn off! Experiment with it and let us know if you’ve found a recipe you’d like to share!

Member Events

For those of you who made it out to u-pick last week and/or out for the Strawberry Salute - it was so great to have you! Welcoming folks into our fields can be a little stressful. They aren’t always looking the best, there are often weeds and tripping hazards and these spaces are filled with the precious fruits that keep the farm in business- it can feel risky for many reasons. But our community showed up and respected the sacred spaces supremely (aside from a doggy bag or two…a kind reminder to carry out folks!) Kids were running around, being kids, faces were painted, produce was purchased, music was in the air and the day was beautiful - despite a few gusty-dusty blows. We’re teed up to make the next gathering even better - all signs point to a future space offering more of all that good stuff.

If you've got kiddos and haven't made it to tot-time yet, this week is a good one. Wednesdays 4:30pm-5:30pm. We'll be eating strawbs, reading jamberry and picking flowers!

News From the Fields

While it’s hard to imagine thinking about the fall before summer fruiting crops have even arrived, our team is kicking off seeding for this fall’s brassicas (kale, broccoli, cabbage, etc.). Beyond that, they are working on next year's strawberry crop planting. Can you imagine having to think that far ahead all the time? In a world where the days fly by unassisted it puts things into an unwelcome overdrive. We're also getting another succession of cucurbits (cukes and zukes) in the ground this hot week. A sure challenge as they struggle with transplant shock in the best of conditions. However, they are in urgent need of coverage with row cover to protect them from pests and so the heat will be dialed up further under those blankies….so a bit of a damned if you do damned if you don't situation. Hopefully an early and heavy dose of water will keep them comfy…send cool (as a cucumber) thoughts-to the plants AND our crew this week.

Do you need a reminder?

We are setting up our text message reminder system. If you want to get pinged on pickup day, make sure you are opted into sms messaging with us. Here's the link to make it happen.

Don't worry, the only SPAM we know comes in a can and goes great sliced and fried up with baby bok choy.

If you have any questions, concerns or feedback, you can always direct them to our CSA Coordinator at csa@titusville.farm and they will get back to you within 1-2 business days!

Stay kind and be nourished!

With Gratitude,

The TVF Team
