CSA Week 1
CSA

Greetings members!
Big thanks to this whole farmily who came together with excitement, patience and kindness as we launched last week. Running and organizing a CSA is a lot of work especially as we test drive things in these early weeks. Whether it was emails getting sent to spam, realizing you actually want a smaller or larger share, or shortages on the selection table at pick-up…the first week was so crucial to us building a better week ahead and we are so committed to making that count. That said, the trip-ups were greatly outmatched by triumphs. The community developing here is full of understanding, supportive members ready to make us feel appreciated even as we gain our footing. This is a team effort and ours is pretty sweet, thanks for being part of it.

Harvest Highlight
I hope there are some foods both new and familiar to you in this first share. If you’re not fully acquainted with them now, there are a few you certainly will be by the end of the season. For example, it’s not unlikely that you will be seeing kale and lettuce every week this season. For some they might feel like a welcome friend each share but for others…frenemy status is on the horizon. Let me give you a few quick and early tips to keep this CSA standard lively and exciting for the foreseeable future.
Creative and delicious ways to stay civil with kale:
Classic: Kale Salad. Caesar, Citrus and Creamy Tahini. - change it up or keep it steady.
Sneaky: Kale Pesto. Add it to a classic recipe, sub in sunflower seeds, walnuts or pepitas for pine nuts, use Nutritional yeast to make it vegan, and pro-tip: add olive oil last as pureeing it in the food processor for too long turns the pesto bitter!
Crunchy: Kale chips. The midwestern twist: garlic powder, onion powder, dried chives and dill, nutritional yeast….it’s ranch folks, everyone loves it, no need to pretend otherwise.
Frozen: Quickly blanch your kale, squeeze out the excess water and freeze it in little balls on a sheet tray, then toss in a ziplock - add to smoothies and soups all year long.
Gifted: When you’re at the end of your rope, just pass that kale to your neighbor, friend or in-laws who will see it as a thoughtful gesture (hopefully :)
Member Events
In case you missed last week’s email, strawberry picking is launching this week! We are holding special member-only picking hours before it opens to the public on Sunday afternoon during Strawberry Salute:
Friday June 5 — 1pm–3:30pm
Saturday June 6 — 1pm–3:30pm
Sunday June 7 — 10am–11am (before Strawberry Salute opens)
We’d love it if you’d stick around and join us for a member’s meet up at 11:15 after picking on Sunday. There will be activities to entertain the kiddos, face painting, farm tours and music to be enjoyed throughout the day on the farm - the perfect backdrop for shaking hands, sharing a snack and exchanging recipes.
News From the Fields
May-July is really make it or break it time for the farm. If you get behind here, you’re gonna be running ragged til November - or even more likely, you just give up for the season and take your place face down among the weeds and languishing crops. Our farmers are really tasked to show-up and push through whatever they might have going on during these crucial weeks, all working together towards the same shared goal of not being completely demoralized in August and it’s exhausting! Trellising tomatoes, weeding the beets and carrots, mowing the drive lanes, washing the bins and crates…we’re in marathon mode now friends! BUT you wouldn’t believe how encouraging words of gratitude from our members can be so share the love with our team and we’ll make sure word gets back to them!
That’s all for this week - we hope your first share hits the spots and we look forward to seeing you next week!
If you have any questions, concerns or feedback, you can always direct them to our CSA Coordinator at csa@titusville.farm and they will get back to you within 1 business day!
Stay kind and be nourished!
With Gratitude,
The TVF Team
